Come celebrate “Eloise Greenfield Day” with Sankofa Video & Books in Washington, D.C. on April 2

We would like to invite you to participate in "Eloise Greenfield Day: A 40th Anniversary Celebration of HONEY, I LOVE" on April 22, 2018 at Sankofa Video & Books in Washington, D.C., which is hosting this major event that the bookstore hopes to take to the next level by having surprise appearances by some of her past colleagues and contributors. Jan Spivey Gilchrist, who has illustrated many of Ms. Greenfield's books, will say a few words about their relationship and the work they have done together over the years and will also introduce Eloise Greenfield before her talk.

The celebration will include a reading of some of her poems by local elementary school children; a live performance of Honey, I Love with a jazz vocalist and quartet, inspired by the 1982 recording with Eloise Greenfield and jazz musician Byron Morris; a conversation between Eloise Greenfield and her daughter, Monica; and a signing of her new book, PAR-TAY! DANCE OF THE VEGGIES (Alazar Press).

From April 16-21, Sankofa Video & Books is inviting intergenerational groups of women to record oral memories of their girlhood in a manner similar to the intergenerational memoir CHILDTIMES (HarperCollins), which Ms. Greenfield wrote with her mother, Lessie Jones Little. A selection of these recorded memories will be played during the program on Eloise Greenfield Day. Sankofa patrons will also be able to complete their own family trees at Sankofa during this week, as Ms. Greenfield did in CHILDTIMES.

Additionally, Sankofa Video & Books is planning to have the mayor's office officially declare April 22 Eloise Greenfield Day.

Sankofa Video & Books is located at 2714 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001 and, if you live in or are visiting the Washington D.C. area, we hope you'll be able to join the celebration.

If you have any questions, feel free to call Sankofa Video & Books at (202) 234-4755 or contact Balkin Buddies.
